Actisaf® helping to produce healthier, happier and heavier piglets

Gareth Marry runs a 500-sow birth to bacon unit in County Meath, producing 300 piglets a week. After taking over the farm from his father in 2015, Gareth had ambitious plans to increase piglet growth rates. Now, following several refinements to the production system, the average litter weaning weight has jumped from 85kg/sow to 100kg/sow.

Part of these changes have included looking for nutritional solutions to help boost piglet growth rates, as well as support sow health and reduce antibiotic use. Having benefited from feeding Actisaf occasionally in the past, Gareth decided to start incorporating it into his sow’s lactating diet at a rate of 1kg/tonne.

“I started noticing a difference in sow performance very quickly,” explains Gareth. “Within three weeks of feeding Actisaf the sows were eating more and milking better. I found that feed efficiency also improved, and this is hugely beneficial considering current feed prices.

“The sows seem to be much healthier too and experience less problems with mammary gland inflammation and bacterial infections. This has helped to significantly reduce our antibiotic usage on the unit.”

When fed to lactating sows, Actisaf can support both gut health and milk quality by enhancing the gut flora in the digestive system. As a result, Actisaf has been shown to improve milk yields which in turn leads to stronger piglets, and to lower incidences of scour.

“There was a visible difference in the piglets, as they put on weight more quickly and generally look stronger,” continues Gareth. “I’ve also seen much lower rates of scour and digestive problems since using Actisaf, with the piglets being weaned in a healthier, happier, and heavier condition.

“I will definitely continue to use Actisaf. It’s such a flexible and easy-to-use solution which really makes a noticeable difference to both piglet growth rates and health. It’s also helped to reduce antibiotic usage and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking to do the same.”
